Since 1888, National Geographic’s Washington, D.C. headquarters has been the hub for explorers returning from global expeditions to share discoveries and stories. Today, that legacy is evolving with a complete modernization of its three-building campus home to offices, a museum, and event spaces.

The transformation unifies the campus with refreshed grounds, façades, and a reimagined courtyard anchored by a new two-story pavilion. Inside, 67,300 square feet of ground-floor renovations will enhance visitor experiences with updated reception, ticketing, galleries, exhibits, a library, theater, cafeteria, kitchen, and museum store. Below grade, expanded spaces will support museum programming and office functions.

The redesigned museum will immerse guests in iconic photography, world-renowned artifacts, and interactive exhibitions. A new education center positions the campus as a must-visit destination for school groups, while the renovated theater introduces cutting-edge technology for storytelling. Visitors can gather at the Explorers Bar & Grill a space to connect and reflect.

Sustainability is central to the project, with efforts such as recycling materials from the existing buildings, installing solar panels to supply 25% of the campus’s power, and implementing a gray water system to reduce environmental impact. Additional green features include bird-safe glass and a living green wall to help purify the air.

The result? A campus that celebrates stunning imagery, bold storytelling, and a rich heritage of exploration while looking forward to a future dedicated to protecting our planet.
