Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can enter buildings through the soil beneath them and accumulate indoors, creating serious health risks if left unaddressed. As awareness of indoor environmental quality continues to grow, understanding how to effectively incorporate radon mitigation strategies into building design has become increasingly important for architects, engineers, and building owners. Attendees of this AIA-accredited course will gain a foundational understanding of what radon is, how it enters buildings, and why mitigation measures should be considered during design and construction.

Presented by Steve Dacus, PE, LEED AP, Principal, Interface Engineering and Jeff Humphreys, AIA, CSI, LEED BD-C, Assoc. DBIA, Principal at Mackenzie, this webinar will examine the codes, standards, and regulatory requirements that inform radon mitigation design. Participants will learn about key guidance documents, testing considerations, and best practices that support healthier indoor environments and compliance with applicable requirements.

The course will explore two primary mitigation approaches—passive and active radon mitigation systems—and discuss where each strategy is most effectively applied. Attendees will gain insight into the advantages and limitations of both systems, as well as the components that make up a successful mitigation design, including foundation preparation, venting systems, piping design, and construction coordination.

  • Understand what radon gas is and why mitigation systems are important for occupant health.
  • Become familiar with codes, standards, and guidelines governing radon mitigation.
  • Learn the differences between passive and active mitigation strategies, including the benefits and limitations of each approach.
